Prof. Alessandro Olivi is the Director of the Complex Operative Unit of Neurosurgery, as well as the Director of the Institute of Neurosurgery.

Section and pathologies

Nurosurgery

The Complex Operational Unit is organized into two sections. One section has as its main operative scope of surgery and endovascular therapy of cerebral vascular malformations (aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous angiomas).

The other section is mainly dedicated to the surgery of brain tumours (meningiomas, gliomas, etc.) and, in the field of neuroendocrine surgery, to the surgery of pituitary adenomas and craniopharyngiomas.

Spinal pathology (herniated discs, spinal stenosis and instability), hydrocephalus and peripheral nervous system surgery (decompression and reconstruction of nerves, removal of nerve tumours) are also treated in the Unit.

Finally, the UOC of Neurosurgery includes Functional and Stereotaxic Neurosurgery which deals with the surgical treatment of Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, chronic non-cancer pain, spasticity, trigeminal neuralgia and epilepsies.

The structure

Surgical activity is carried out in 4 dedicated operating rooms, one of which is dedicated exclusively to emergencies, and equipped with sophisticated technologies for neurosurgery (operating microscopes, ultrasound aspirator, neuronavigation, lasers, neurophysiological monitoring systems).

There are 6 beds dedicated to post-operative neurosurgical intensive care.
