Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine

The Rehabilitation Team

The Rehabilitation Team, whose Director is Prof. Roberto Bernabei consists of the following professional figures: geriatric doctors, physiatrist doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses, professionals, and social and health workers.

Active Aging Clinic

The Operating Unit of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine includes the Active Aging Clinic directed by Dr Silvia Giovannini.

The clinic offers the possibility of a complete multidimensional assessment with particular attention to the nutritional, motor and cognitive aspects of the patient. After appropriate evaluation, the patient is directed to the most suitable therapy and personalized treatments with the ultimate aim of improving quality of life and health, and opportunities for active longevity.

Ageing brings with it universal and non-reversible changes, but not necessarily disabling. The Active Aging Clinic aims to intercept the disabling consequences of the multimorbidity of the elderly and provide everyone with the necessary tools to preserve their self-sufficiency for as long as possible.

Evaluation of the Walking Performance

The Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Unit also avails itself of the collaboration of a Biomedical Engineer and a Neurologist for Gait Analysis which takes place in a dedicated clinic.

The analysis of movement and the study of postural abnormalities in patients with motor problems can give very important information to know the level of functional limitation resulting from the pathology and its evolution over time.

It also provides important elements for evaluating the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions in the recovery of alterations resulting from the pathological state.

Through Gait Analysis it is possible to define, by using sophisticated equipment, the ambulatory pattern of the subject under examination.

Thanks to some of its important properties such as non-invasiveness, the possibility of repeating the exam several times in a short period of time, and the quantitative character and the three-dimensionality of the data provided, it stands as a fundamental tool of investigation in the analysis of human movement.

The movement analysis laboratory present within the Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Operating Unit allows to carry out, through the use of advanced biomedical technologies, evaluation and functional diagnosis of gait and posture for the survey, processing and comparison of dynamic and electrolymographic kinematic parameters.

The analysis of human posture and movement is a rapidly expanding biomedical field of great interest from a clinical point of view, as posture and movement are the results of the interaction of three main physiological systems: the nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, and the sensory system.

Multidimensional Evaluation rehabilitation

Particular attention is paid to the evaluation of all problem areas of the patient to be rehabilitated. All hospitalized patients receive a multidimensional assessment (through the interRAI PAC assessment tool) performed by people with specific training, which includes verification of functional status and cognitive abilities, nutritional status, mood and behaviour.

This type of assessment is essential to provide a comprehensive response to the needs of the patient and his family.

Gemelli Physiotherapy Center

The Center, for which Prof. Antonio Sgadari is responsible, offers an articulated treatment path, in which rehabilitation and re-education, maintenance and prevention contribute to achieving maximum functional recovery and psycho-physical well-being.

Rehabilitation treatments for people returning from an osteo-muscular injury, surgery or suffering from the exacerbation of chronic disease are individual and include:

  • manual therapies (joint mobilization, assisted muscle stretching, decontracting, reflexive, myofascial, lymphatic drainage or deep transverse massage, capsular stretching, pompage, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, taping, osteopathy);
  • instrumental therapies (high-power laser, TECAR, ultrasound, shock waves, hyperthermia, magnetotherapy, T.E.N.S., iontophoresis, electrostimulation);
  • active kinesitherapy (exercises in natural load, with small tools, free weights, strength training machines and ergometers of various types carried out under the guidance of the physiotherapist).

Prevention and maintenance are aimed at people with stabilized chronic conditions and those who want to prevent diseases.

They are based on medical gymnastics courses, diversified and specific for postural problems: chronic lower back and back pain, musculoskeletal imbalances, chronic pelvic pain, balance/movement disorders or on individual training protocols, for patients with heart disease, obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes, vascular diseases...

rehabilitation bed

All treatments are carried out under the constant supervision of the medical staff, who draw up the personalized rehabilitation or maintenance/prevention protocol and supervise the work with specific tests and periodic control visits. The staff consists of a geriatrician, a sports doctor, two physiatrists and 11 physiotherapists.

At the Center, it is possible to carry out tests such as stress EKG, cardiopulmonary stress test, the study of basal metabolism, the study of body composition, computerized analysis of the steps, static and dynamic stabilometry, determination of the risk of falls, bone densitometry, metabolic Holter with the determination of the level of physical activity in everyday life and treatments such as intra-articular infiltration of hyaluronic acid and mesotherapy.
