The General Surgery Unit focuses on the care and research of oncological surgery for primary and recurrent tumours of the digestive system, with particular attention to esophago-cardial, gastric, and colorectal tumours (carcinomas, GISTs, and neuroendocrine tumours). Additionally, the structure also covers most non-oncological abdominal conditions of surgical interest (esophago-gastric junction diseases, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, simple and complex abdominal wall surgery, cholecystectomies). Most surgical procedures are performed using minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopy - robotics). All oncological surgery activities are part of the multidisciplinary management pathways for neoplastic diseases within the Comprehensive Cancer Center.
With reference to esophago-cardial, gastric, colon, and rectal adenocarcinomas, the entire team of the Unit is a national and international reference for the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal tumours, performing over 90 gastric resections and more than 350 colorectal resections in the 2017-2018 biennium. A cornerstone of this activity is the continuous updating on cutting-edge surgical techniques, with the organization of national and international courses on laparoscopic gastrectomy for stomach cancer and combined transabdominal and transanal resection (TaTME) for middle and lower rectal tumours.
