Policlinico Gemelli IRCCS di Roma

Pathology

The Pathology Unit performs histopathological (tissue) and cytological (cell) diagnostic examinations on samples taken from patients for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. These examinations are crucial in oncology for diagnosing tumors and determining their malignancy for prognostic and therapeutic purposes, as well as in non-oncological fields for diagnosing and treating non-neoplastic diseases (inflammatory, infectious, degenerative) and in important areas such as organ transplants. The Oncohematological Pathology Unit focuses on diagnosing blood diseases and hemolymphopoietic organ disorders.

Our Pathology Services utilize traditional morphological study methods, integrated with in situ molecular characterization techniques when necessary. For cytological examinations, we use liquid-based thin-layer preparation techniques, facilitating the use of immunocytochemical (e.g., malignancy markers in thyroid cytology, estrogen-progestin receptors in breast cytology) and molecular methods.

Each year, the Pathology Service performs over 200,000 diagnostic support procedures, including more than 51,000 histological reports, 16,000 cytological reports (half of which are fine-needle aspiration cytology).

Our diagnostic activities are organized by organ-specific pathology, with specialized units for autopsy activities, dermatopathology, neuropathology, breast pathology, thoracic pathology, and digestive system pathology.
