Policlinico Gemelli IRCCS di Roma

Vascular Surgery

The Vascular Surgery Unit adopts a multidisciplinary and high-tech approach to the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with arterial or venous diseases. This unit is a reference center for both surgical and endovascular treatment of aortic diseases (abdominal, thoracic, thoraco-abdominal, and aortic arch) and for clinical and care activities aimed at diagnosing and treating all vascular system diseases.

In our outpatient clinics, we offer specialized care through various dedicated services. For instance, we have a vascular surgery pathology clinic and a multidisciplinary aortic pathology clinic where we collaborate closely with cardiac surgeons and cardiologists. Additionally, we run a joint clinic with infectious disease specialists to manage vascular patients with infections.

We treat a wide array of conditions, from stenosis and aneurysms of the carotid and subclavian arteries to complex aortic aneurysms and dissections. Our expertise also extends to managing visceral vessel diseases, such as renal and mesenteric artery stenosis, and lower limb artery conditions, including diabetic foot and varicose veins.

Our Vascular and Aortic Teams are composed of a diverse group of specialists, including vascular surgeons, radiologists, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and anaesthetists. This collaborative effort ensures that each patient receives tailored and efficient care. We also hold regular Transatlantic Aortic Team meetings, where experts from our institution and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia discuss complex cases via telemedicine.

One of our standout features is the Hybrid Operating Room. This multifunctional space combines surgical and interventional procedures with advanced diagnostic capabilities. The room is equipped with sophisticated technology that allows for both surgical and endovascular interventions. This setup fosters a collaborative environment where various specialists, such as cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional cardiologists, and radiologists, work together seamlessly. The use of advanced imaging technologies, like fusion imaging and IVUS, enhances the precision and efficiency of our procedures.

In summary, the UOC of Vascular Surgery provides top-tier care through a combination of advanced technology, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a patient-centred approach. Our goal is to ensure that every patient receives the best possible treatment and care.
