The Neurosurgery Unit ensures comprehensive and excellent patient care with its highly qualified staff. Surgical activities are performed in state-of-the-art operating rooms equipped with advanced technologies such as the latest generation operating microscopes, cranial and spinal navigation systems, O-arm®2 intraoperative imaging, 3D and 4K endoscopes, ultrasonic aspirators, lasers, and neurophysiological monitoring systems for intraoperative neurological mapping. Over 3,000 surgeries are performed annually, with 24/7 emergency neurosurgical care available year-round.
The unit is organized into sections covering the full spectrum of neurosurgical pathology:
- Brain Tumours: surgical treatment of primary and secondary brain tumours, meningiomas, and cranial tumours. Complex cases are discussed in a weekly Tumour Board involving a multidisciplinary team.
- Vascular: focuses on surgical and endovascular treatment of cerebral vascular diseases like aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. The Vascular Board discusses complex cases.
- Spinal: manages spinal cord and vertebral column diseases, including tumours, degenerative spine conditions, and spinal vascular pathologies. The Spine Board involves a multidisciplinary team for complex cases.
- Endoscopy and Sellar/Parasellar Surgery treats lesions affecting the pituitary gland and surrounding areas. Complex cases are reviewed in the Pituitary Board.
- Functional Neurosurgery: treats drug-resistant epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, chronic pain, Parkinson's disease, movement disorders, and spasticity.
- Neurotraumatology and Hydrocephalus manages cranial trauma, cerebral hematomas, post-traumatic hydrocephalus, and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics disorders.
- Peripheral Nervous System Surgery: treats benign and malignant nerve tumours, traumatic nerve injuries, and chronic compressive neuropathies.
