Policlinico Gemelli IRCCS di Roma

Sports Medicine

Our Sports Medicine Unit focuses on clinical and functional evaluations, particularly in cardiology. This includes assessments for athletes with electrocardiographic abnormalities, valvular heart diseases, and conditions that pose a risk of sudden cardiac death during sports, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. The unit offers specialized consultations and advanced diagnostic tests.

Among the services provided, patients can undergo a resting electrocardiogram (ECG) to check the heart's electrical activity. For a more detailed view, two-dimensional and three-dimensional echocardiograms with color Doppler are available, which use ultrasound to create images of the heart and assess blood flow.

For those needing stress tests, the unit offers exercise ECGs on a cycle ergometer or treadmill, as well as on an arm-crank ergometer for upper body exercise. There is also a monitored step-test exercise ECG and cardiopulmonary exercise testing to evaluate heart and lung function during physical activity.

Patients can benefit from Holter ECG monitoring, which records the heart's activity over 24 to 48 hours, and high-resolution ECGs to detect late potentials, which are subtle abnormalities in the heart's electrical signals. Additionally, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring is available to track blood pressure changes throughout the day and night.

The unit also provides services for individuals with various disabilities, across all ages, who participate in or wish to engage in sports. These evaluations are conducted in a dedicated space using specific ergometers.
