The Peritoneal and Retroperitoneal Surgery Unit specializes in treating primary and secondary tumours of the peritoneum and retroperitoneal sarcomas. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates with specialists in Medical Oncology, Gynaecologic Oncology, Radiotherapy, Radiology, and Pathology during weekly Tumour Board meetings to determine the best treatment plans for each patient.
The Unit is accredited by the European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology of the ESSO (European Society of Surgical Oncology).
Commonly Treated Conditions:
- Primary peritoneal tumours (Pseudomyxomas and Mesotheliomas)
- Peritoneal carcinomatosis from digestive tumours (stomach, colon, pancreas)
- Primary tumours of the stomach and colorectal area
- Retroperitoneal sarcomas
- GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors)
Advanced Techniques:
- Peritonectomy: Surgical removal of visible macroscopic disease in the peritoneum and affected organs (complete cytoreduction - CRS).
- Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC): Administered to treat residual microscopic peritoneal disease with high-temperature chemotherapy, enhancing drug efficacy and reducing systemic exposure.
- PIPAC (Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy): A minimally invasive technique for treating peritoneal carcinomatosis in patients not eligible for cytoreductive surgery, delivering chemotherapy via aerosol.
- Innovative Radiological Techniques: IGRT (Image-Guided Radiotherapy) and IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy) for precise treatment of retroperitoneal sarcomas, minimizing damage to healthy tissues.
