The Agostino Gemelli University Hospital IRCCS Poison Control Center has existed since 1971 and provides toxicological advice throughout the national territory. Since 1995 it has been a regional and specialist reference centre for emergencies.
The Poison Control Center is a service provided by the Complex Operative Unit of Resuscitation, Intensive Care and Clinical toxicology.

It takes advantage of the continuous collaboration of specialists and doctors with training in anaesthesia, resuscitation and intensive care.
The head of the department is Dr Alessandro Barelli, Professor of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, member of the Emergency Medical Team of the Holy See (Vatican State) and Consultant in Clinical Toxicology, as well as Director of the TREE Education Center. He is the previous Chairman of the European Center for Disaster Medicine and President of the Italian Resuscitation Council.
